There's a new drug that seems to be more effective at improving your sex lives than Viagra, but it won't cure erectile dysfunction.
A new study found it's a treatment that may help, but it doesn't cure it.
The study,, published in the Journal of Sexual Medicine and Clinics, looked at more than 50 million men over age 40 and found that taking Viagra improved erections by about 30 percent. But it didn't cure it.
"There is no evidence that Viagra is more effective than any other ED treatment in clinical trials," said lead author, Phyllis W. Blanck, Ph. D., a researcher at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
"It's really important that men who have erectile dysfunction be aware that taking Viagra has been proven to be very effective in improving sexual function and quality of life for many men."
Viagra is a phosphodiesterase-5 inhibitor. It works by increasing blood flow to the penis, which helps men to get and keep an erection.
The study was part of a larger study that followed more than 1,000 men from about June 2009 to March 2010.
"Although it's the first FDA-approved treatment for erectile dysfunction, the side effects of Viagra and sildenafil are relatively mild," said Blonck. "Viagra can be taken in pill form and works by relaxing the blood vessels, which in turn increases blood flow to the penis."
Viagra is available only by prescription in the U. S. and Europe.
"The side effects of Viagra and sildenafil are relatively mild and are usually temporary, but there is no need to try it," said Blonck. "Men taking Viagra should be aware that the medication has a long half-life, which means it stays in the system for about four hours.

"If these people had sex more often, the benefits could outweigh the risks," she said. "It's important that these people don't just take Viagra and try it on their own."
Blonck said Viagra may help people who have trouble with sexual function because they have problems with ejaculation. The side effects of Viagra are also temporary and usually subside with time, she said.
"It may help to reduce the frequency of sex and, perhaps, to help you get more active," she said.
