The U. S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has warned of potential fatalities of an over-the-counter (OTC) Viagra-like drug in an effort to stop the spread of COVID-19 in the first month of its release.
According to theNew York Timesthat the drug is a “potent, life-saving drug that has been approved by the FDA for the treatment of COVID-19 in the United States,” it is “not indicated for use in patients with a severe form of the illness.”
In an FDA letter published on Wednesday, the agency warned of potential serious adverse events.
In the letter, a company released to the FDA the following details about the drug: “The FDA received an email from Pfizer in June saying that it was working with a manufacturer to develop a drug that is approved for use in the United States as a treatment for the severe form of COVID-19. Pfizer has developed a new drug to treat the severe form of COVID-19 and has received approval from the U. Food and Drug Administration for this treatment.”
The FDA also stated that the “patent for the development of a novel, safe and effective treatment for COVID-19 in the United States has not yet been approved in the United States.”
The FDA issued a press release on Thursday afternoon, saying it had received a “very disturbing” response from the company: “We are very sorry for the situation and are still taking action to address it and to make sure all the necessary precautions are followed while this is being communicated to the public.”
